Hail or Storm Damage

Oklahoma is notorious for its hail and storm damage to roofing shingles. Probably the most common question we get from people is whether or not they need to replace their roof after a mild to moderate hail storm because they often don't see any damage on their roofs. The answer is possibly. Here are some signs to look for.

What does hail damage look like on asphalt shingle roofs?

Large dents or abrasions in the roofing material are usually a good sign of hail and or storm damage. Areas of lost mineral granules will be apparent, with more severe granule loss on roof slopes facing the direction from which the hailstones fell (or blew) during the storm. Inspecting an asphalt shingle roof shortly after a hail storm, if the roof has been damaged, should show that the areas of mineral granule loss have exposed "fresh" looking shingle substrate.

Tornado Damage

Tornado damage is fairly easy to spot. Missing shingles is usually a good sign of tornado damage. In more severe cases missing portions of a roof can happen.
